Building a deep and mutually supportive relationships with our beautiful Earth goes back to the time of the Buddha.
Walking meditation can act as a way for us all to connect with and be nurtured by the Earth, while eating meditation encourage us to consider how we are caring for the Earth in a sustainable way.
The Plum village community and Thich Nhat Hanh have been deeply concerned about the great danger our earth is in; we humans have exploited the earth’s resources, seeing the earth as separate instead of interconnected with us all. In 1970 Thich Nhat Hanh was involved in organising one of the first international conferences on the environment, and continued this work throughout the rest of his life.
In the following pages you will find a curated set of resources developed by the Plum Village Community that we hope will engage, maybe educate and help you support and feel supported by the Earth, our most beautiful Bodhisattva.
When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don’t blame the lettuce. You look for reasons it is not doing well. It may need fertilizer, or more water, or less sun. You never blame the lettuce. Yet if we have problems with our friends or family, we blame the other person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will grow well, like the lettuce. Blaming has no positive effect at all, nor does trying to persuade using reason and argument. That is my experience. No blame, no reasoning, no argument, just understanding. If you understand, and you show that you understand, you can love, and the situation will change.
